FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TO FOP GALLEGOS :

Sir, I would consider it an unprecendented honor
to be included in your proposed boycott. I have been
a supporter of a fair trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal (as
well as a number of others of his honorable crew, including
Ruchell Cinque Magee, Eddie Conway, Leonard Peltier, etc)
since becoming active in the struggle
to free political prisoners in US prisons.
I have been an independent contractor in the siding
business for 25 years. I am also literate. I have read
sufficient extracts from the so-call trial directed
at me from both sides, including your own page. There
is no question in my mind that this trial was a mockery
and that Mumia is a man of exceptional courage, clarity
and principal.
My business is "The Siding Company," and I am
located in Lafayette, Indiana. I will not allow my
support of Mumia Abu-Jamal to be impugned by jackals of
whatever stripe, nor will I be silenced. So go head
on and boycott. This would be an excellent opportunity
for me to publicize further the cause of justice.

Dear Comrades and Friends

The Azanian People's Organisation (AZAPO); student wing, Azanian
Students Convention(AZASCO) and its youth wing, Azanian Youth
Organisation(AZAYO), will have a joint National Congress in
Bloemfontein, Free State Province, South Africa (AZANIA), from the 24th
September - 26th September 1999.

This will be on the same week of Mumia Abu-Jamal Awareness Campaign,
therefore all the delegates and observers at that congress, will be
asked to sign a petition to demonstrate our international support to
Mumia, his family, friends, comrades and other progressive forces
internationally.

The petition will either be sent to the American Embassey in Pretoria
or be directly mailed to the Mumia support group. We surely from the
Southern tip of Africa, AZANIA, would like to see Mumia a Free Man. It
is becoming a trend throught the whole world that those who speak like
Biko, Tiro, Mumia and others, are not given chance to live and lead
their people.

As one the South African acclaimed international Poet, Lesego
Rampolokeng say," Truth is treason, and Liers rule the World".Indeed,
when you tell the truth, the whole world stand against you.

We were most fortunate enough here in Azania, Cde Kwame Toure (Stockley
Carmichael) was part of our 20th Biko Anniversary in 1997, he also
addressed number of our students here during AZASCO National Council. We
need more revolutionary like him and MUMIA.

AZANIAN STUDENTS AND YOUTH IN SOLIDARITY - MUMIA SHOULD NOT DIE.

FREE PUBLIC DISCUSSION
“MUMIA & THE DEATH PENALTY”
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24TH
6:00 – 9:00 PM AT
ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER CHURCH
1640 ADDISON STREET IN BERKELEY

Berkeley, CA (August 13, 1999) – PEN Oakland invites the public to the
free open discussion Mumia and the Death Penalty on Friday, September
24th at St. Joseph The Worker Church (1640 Addison Street in Berkeley)
from 6:00 - 9:00 PM.

This public forum is not an exercise on whether or not we as a nation
should abolish the death penalty, but rather an examination of the
historical, and cultural implications of the death penalty and its
effect on our society. Panelists will dialogue on the effects of the
death penalty on our culture? As a nation, how has the death penalty
effected us? Do we feel safer? Historically has it made a difference,
both positive and negative?

Our panelists include: noted author and UC Berkeley Professor Ishmael
Reed, UC Berkeley Political Science Professor Bruce Cain, Hastings Law
School Professor Rory Little, Occidental College Associate Professor Garielle
Foreman, author Melody Ermachild Chavis, and radio journalist Kiilu
Nyasha. The event will be moderated by journalist and news commentator
Emil Guillermo.

The goal of this public forum is to explore the human condition with our
audience, exchange ideas, values, information, and to critically look at
our society and system of justice.

Because of the high profile of condemned African-American journalist
Mumia Abu-Jamal, who has spent the last 17 years on Pennsylvania’s death
row, much of the debate will center upon this particular case. This case has
received a great deal of media attention, running the gamut from ethnic
newspapers, leading publications to a recent article in Vanity Fair.
At his 1982 trial, Mumia Abu Jamal was convicted of killing Philadelphia
police officer Daniel Faulkner. He was denied the right to defend
himself, and assigned a court-appointed attorney who was unprepared to
mount an effective defense. His political views were used to argue that
he should be put to death.

In his appeals of this conviction, Abu-Jamal presented evidence that
witnesses were intimidated and coerced to provide false testimony. Abu-Jamal
was forced to make his appeals before the same judge that sentenced him to
death in 1982. Judge Albert Sabo rejected Abu-Jamal’s bids for a new trial,
and last fall the elected justices of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court
concurred, paving the way for Abu-Jamal’s execution.

This program will examine an issue that tears at the very heart of the
American fabric, whether or not a human being has the right to take
another’s life. Although this is not a pro or con debate on the death
penalty, it is an open forum where people will be asked to look at this
issue from a point of law, in a historical context, as well as how it
relates to their own world, and their own philosophy on life and
existence. The panel will act as facilitators, allowing the audience to
explore the many layers of the death penalty issue.

For more information on the program, please call (510) 525-3948.

PLANS CONTINUE TO GROW FOR “100 CITIES FOR MUMIA”
Paris, France, is setting a very good example with their full week of
activities planned as part of “Cent villes pour Mumia”! Monday, Sept. 20
will have a night of poetry, Tuesday, Sept. 21 will feature an art
exposition, Thursday, Sept. 23 will be an evening program against the death
penalty, Friday, Sept. 24 we be a Pan African evening. Then on Saturday,
September 25, a march assembling in front of the U.S. consulate. Their
slogan is “For Mumia, as for Mandela!”

In New York, plans call for a march from the Harlem State Office Building to
march to Columbus Circle. Joined there by thousands more, there will be a
march to Times Square.

San Francisco is holding three separate car caravans through different
neighborhoods, with sound equipment and decorated cars. The caravans will
drop literature tables and agitators off at key points along the route to
spread the word.

In Philadelphia, there will be a Philadelphians for Mumia demonstration, to
put the lie to the FOP claim that no one in Philadelphia supports Mumia.

100 BLACK WOMEN IN WHITE ACTION
On Saturday, August 28, 100 Black Women in White will go door to door in
Philadelphia to say “Enough is Enough!” Everyone is invited, but it will be
led by the sisters in white (form up at the Church of the Advocate, Broad
and Columbia, at 10:00 am). Civil disobedience will be part of the action.

SEND FUNDS TO BUILD THE MOVEMENT!
See details at end.

MUMIA CENSORED BY PRISON OFFICIALS . . . AGAIN!
Mumia gets a 15-minute phone call every week to someone on his approved
phone list. On Thursday, August 12, he was using that right to talk to
Pacifica Network’s “Democracy Now” in support of Puerto Rican political
prisoners.

Suddenly a guard rushed up and pulled out the cord on the phone. Mumia
describes what happened next: “Another guard appeared at the cell door
hollering at the top of his lungs: “This call is terminated!” When I
demanded to know why, he replied, “This order came down from the very top!”
I immediately called to the Sgt. standing by and looking on, “Sgt! Where did
this order come from?”

He shrugged his shoulders, answering, “I dunno. We just got a phone call to
cut you off..”

We need reports from the dozens of smaller cities and schools who are doing
September 25, so we can add them to the growing list. Also send reports on
actions planned for the International Youth and Student Day, Tuesday,
September 21.

GET READY NOW FOR A NEW DEATH WARRANT — POSSIBLY IN AUGUST

Before any warrant is signed:
1. Phone your protest to Gov. Tom Ridge at (717) 787-2500.
2. Get your emergency response network organized.
3. Raise money to take buses to Philadelphia.
If a new warrant is signed:
1. Contact media in your area the same day.
2. Demonstrate in your city the next working day.
3. Regional actions, with special emphasis on Philadelphia, date to be
announced.
And build the Mumia Awareness Week into a nationwide response!

NEW EVIDENCE ON THE PHILIP BLOCH “CONFESSION” HOAX
Since Mumia released a personal letter from Philip Bloch, in which Bloch
hopes for justice for Mumia through an acquittal in a new trial, more
evidence has come to light that shows the Bloch story claiming Mumia
“confessed” to him is a complete fabrication.

First, we now have a copy of the list of people authorized to visit Mumia
from the period when Bloch claims to have had his meeting with Mumia. Bloch’
s name is not on it. Since Bloch was fired from the Pennsylvania Prison
Society in 1991, how then did he even get into the prison to hear the
alleged “confession”?

Second, in January of 1995, a full page ad calling on people to “Take a
Stand for Mumia” was published in the Harrisburg Patriot News and the
Philadelphia Tribune. The signers of this ad declared: “We care about Mumia
because there is compelling evidence that points to his innocence.”

Among those who paid $20 to have their name on this ad was, you guessed it,
Philip Bloch. Does that sound like the act of man who had heard Mumia
“confess”? Or does it sound like Bloch is today falsely testifying to
something, that all the evidence indicates never happened?

REPORT ALL ATTACKS — It is very important that all attacks, verbal or
political, physical or in the media, on supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal be
reported to the Mumia Awareness Week at once. Every attack must be responded
to.

BLACK COMMUNITY ACTIONS SET

[draft resolution to take unions]
UNION WEEK OF ACTION FOR MUMIA

WHEREAS Mumia Abu-Jamal is an award-winning journalist--known as the "voice
of the voiceless" --who is on death row in Pennsylvania because of his
courageous opposition to police brutality and corruption, and the desire of
a powerful few to silence him forever; and

WHEREAS highly dubious "confession" stories have been bandied about by major
media such as ABC-TV and Vanity Fair magazine, while Mumia’s own
commentaries on his case, the death penalty, Black liberation and numerous
other issues have been censored and ignored by the same media; and

WHEREAS Mumia’s case is also one of a militant worker sentenced to die on
the basis of his political views, and without ever having received a fair
trial; and

WHEREAS Mumia was denied a new trial by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court
despite the notoriously biased judge and numerous irregularities and
instances of police misconduct in the original trial, and despite the
recantation of her testimony by one of the key witnesses against him; and

WHEREAS Philadelphia police are notorious for frame-ups, having had hundreds
of cases thrown out for violations similar to those committed in Mumia’s
case; and

WHEREAS Mumia Abu-Jamal has consistently supported labor struggles,
including refusing to be interviewed by a scab ABC television crew who were
doing a story on his own case during the NABET/CWA strike; and

WHEREAS Mumia’s struggle for justice has been supported by an historic
West-Coast shutdown of the docks on April 24th 1999 by the International
Longshore and Warehouse Union, as well as by resolutions, demonstrations,
teach-ins and other actions by hundreds of unions and labor councils, in the
US and throughout the world; and

WHEREAS it has always been a principle of organized labor to stand up
against injustice and oppression, and such labor action is a vital component
of Mumia’s defense against persecution by a corrupt criminal justice system;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the _______________________________ (union, labor
council) calls upon every local union in the San Francisco Bay Area to
conduct an educational action in defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal--such as a
lunch-hour teach-in, literature distribution or demonstration--during the
National Week of Justice for Mumia Abu-Jamal, September 19th - 25th, 1999;
and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the _______________________________ (union, labor
council) calls upon the AFL-CIO and all international unions to immediately
begin planning a nationwide day of labor action to free Mumia Abu-Jamal.

>4) DEMONSTRATE TO FREE MUMIA - SEPT. 25th
>
>As part of the national call for "Mumia Awareness Week," September 19 - 25,
>and in conjunction with national and international demonstrations on that
>day, the Twin Cities will hold a militant rally and march on Saturday,
>September 25th. Demanding a new trial, an end to the racist death penalty,
>and FREEDOM for Mumia Abu-Jamal, we will assemble at 2:00 PM outside the
>Walker Library at Hennepin and Lagoon (1 block north of Lake St.) in
>Uptown, Minneapolis.
>
>We're just starting to get the word out, and to assemble progressive forces
>to pull off a substantial demonstration on that day in the Twin Cities.
>Perhaps you belong to an organization that might endorse this demonstration
>and possibly help publicize it, supply a speaker, or set up other events in

>could, if you'd like, send a representative to your group's meeting, or
>arrange to work with you in our common desire to FREE MUMIA! Call our

>
>The last time we held a demonstration for Mumia at Hennepin and Lagoon, we
>had a really GREAT march around uptown, followed by a spontaneous take-over

>was highlighted by the crowd's breaking down the walls of a cardboard

>after all, they have their uptown headquarters right in the building
>housing McDonalds caddy-corner from the library. But do you think they
>wanted to mess with that many angry demonstrators? They just hid in their
>hole and hoped that we would go away. But we got bad news for the cops:
>we're coming back on September 25th, and we'll come back and back until
>MUMIA IS FREE!!

>If you have been receiving this email newsletter for very long, you
>probably already have seen the plan for a timely response should
>Pennsylvania Governor Ridge sign a new death warrant against Mumia. But
>just to refresh your memories, and for the newer subscribers to this
>newsletter, we will repeat the plan below. It is especially important to be

>near future, especially if the US Supreme Court rules against Mumia when
>they reconvene in October. This is only the plan for the Twin Cities and
>nearby areas; if you live elsewhere please contact the closest Mumia
>support group to ascertain the corresponding emergency response plan in
>your area.
>
>The Plan:
>
>On the day AFTER the signing of a death warrant is announced, there will be
>a demonstration at 5:00 P.M. at the intersection of Cedar & Riverside, West
>Bank, Minneapolis, followed by a march.
>
>On the following SATURDAY, there will be a demonstration starting at 1:00
>PM at Peavy Park, S.W. corner of Chicago & Franklin, Minneapolis. A march
>will follow.
>
>If the signing of the death warrant occurs on a Friday, then the Saturday
>plan takes precedence.

>MUMIA SPEAKS OUT ON CRISIS AT PACIFICA
>
>Many or most readers of this newsletter are familiar with, and may be
>regular listeners of Pacific radio network programming. Among other things,
>Pacifica has had a key role in broadcasting the voice of Mumia, especially
>following the censorship of Mumia's commentaries on National Public Radio
>(NPR).
>
>The Pacifica Foundation and the staff of Pacifica stations have been
>embroiled in a crisis this year. As part of this crisis, the popular
>station manager of KPFA, Nicole Sawaya, was terminated, as was Larry
>Bensky, host of the popular "Flashpoints" program. In July, the entire
>staff of KPFA, Pacifica's original station in Berkeley, was locked out and
>their programming replaced. The disgruntled staff of KPFA, along with
>thousands of their supporters who have demonstrated in Berkeley on their
>behalf, have received the support of Prison Radio, a project of the Quixote
>Center, which has long been instrumental in producing Mumia's tapes for
>broadcast. Among other things, it has been alleged that the current
>Pacifica management has been reluctant in the network's historic role in
>broadcasting Mumia's voice. To be fair, it should be pointed out that Mumia
>continues to have commentaries carried monthly on Pacifica's "Democracy
>Now" news program, and Pacifica news continues to provide relatively
>favorable and accurate reporting regarding Mumia's plight.
>
>TCCDMAJ is organized around the defense of Mumia and opposition to the
>death penalty, and we therefore take no position, as an organization,
>regarding the crisis at Pacifica. However in the spirit of enabling Mumia's
>voice, we provide below a transcript of a statement by Mumia in support of
>the KPFA staff against Pacifica management, given by telephone from prison.
>It might be noted that it was shortly after playing this tape of Mumia that
>longtime news reporter Dennis Bernstein was physically removed from KPFA
>studios by armed guards acting at the behest of Pacifica management, and
>the lockout of KPFA staff began. Although the lockout has ended, the crisis
>at Pacifica is still critical, and the future of Pacifica and its stations
>is quite uncertain. We encourage readers to investigate these issues on
>their own, and take action according to their assessment. The following web
>site reflects the positions of the dissident staff at KPFA and their
>thousands of supporters who have demonstrated in Berkeley against Pacifica
>management:
>
>The official Pacifica website can be viewed at:
>
>Following is a transcript of Mumia's tape played on KPFA on July 13th. We
>apologize for any errors in transcription.
>
>The struggle of the staffers at Pacifica's flagship at San Francisco is a
>fundamental one. It is about the freedom of the mind. It is not, as
>administrators suggest, a battle for "progress" nor "professionalism."
>These terms are but media-speak for the "NPRization" of KPFA and a flight
>away from the radical segments into the full relevance of yuppiedom.
>Without the open microphone which has become the laudable hallmark of the
>Pacifica network, the radical sparks that fire whole communities will be
>marginalized to the narrow bands of micro-radio, if not vanished
>altogether, as if capital and its minions in government had their way.
>Former Pacifica president Peter Fronman hit the nail on the head when he
>wrote "I think the thing that has to be remembered is that Pacifica is a
>profoundly subversive, very dangerous organization, and there is a strong
>impetus in Washington to mute it."
>
>One wonders: what is subversive? What's dangerous? In a state where the
>very gene pool is being swiftly commodified, nothing is more dangerous than
>the sound of critical resistance. [Interruption by prison operator] ...
>looks to the people, not to corporations, for its very existence. For
>capital, such an entity threatens its total hegemony and domination. I've
>fought long and hard enough against the gags and muzzles of the state to
>recognize a similar gag job. It's for that reason that I've joined feminist
>wordsmith Alice Walker, feisty poet June Jordan, linguist and teacher Noam
>Chomsky, people's historian Howard Zinn, FAIR [Fairness and Accuracy In
>Media], the Alemeda Central Labor Council, and Berkeley's progressive City
