[Princeton Theological Seminary - KEY MUMIA AWARENESS WEEK EVENT]

LEADING SCHOLARS IN CAMPUS SYMPOSIUM FOR DIALOGUE
ABOUT JOURNALIST ON DEATH ROW

Stuart Hall, Room 6
Thursday, September 23, 1999, 4:00 p.m

Event Title: STOPPING THE EXECUTION OF MUMIA ABU-JAMAL
Between Prison Narrative and Social Movement

Two leading scholars will participate in a symposium discussing the
international movement for Mumia Abu-Jamal, a journalist and author who
has been on Pennsylvania's death row since 1981, convicted of the shooting
death of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. Known as "the
voice of the voiceless" in Philadelphia, Abu-Jamal has published two books
(LIVE FROM DEATH ROW, and DEATH BLOSSOMS) and nearly 400 columns from his
cell. Nobel Laureates, organizations like Amnesty International, and law
professors have spoken out on his behalf based on problems associated with
his trial; artists have put out CDs on his struggle, high school students
have walked out of classes for him in Oakland, New York and Boston, the
West Coast longshoreman stopped work for a day on his behalf. Alice
Walker has described Abu-Jamal on death row as "a rare and courageous
voice speaking from a place we fear to know."

On the Seminary campus for the symposium will be Professor Robin D. G.
Kelley, Prof. of History and Africana Studies at New York University.
Author of many books, among them, Race Rebels: Culture, Politics and the
Black Working Class, Into the Fire: African Americans Since 1970, and Yo'
Mama is DisFUNKtional: Fighting the Culture Wars in Urban America, Kelley
was described by Cornel West as "the preeminent historian of black popular
culture writing today.

Also present will be Professor Farah Jasmine Griffin, Professor of English
at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Who Set you
Flowin': The African-American Migration Narrative, and most recently a
riveting collection of letters written at the time of the civil war that
chronicle the lives of two African-American women from New England,
Beloved Sisters and Loving Friends. She has been the recipient of
fellowships from the Ford Foundation and the Bunting Institute at
Radcliffe College.

The Symposium will be chaired by Mark Taylor, Professor of Theology and
Culture. Sponsored by the Religion and Society Committee, Association of
Black Seminarians, and other student organizations.

>Please honor us by adding us to your Honor Roll list of Mumia Abu Jamal
>supporters whom you wish to boycott and intimidate because we truly
>believe in and support Mumia. I've been on such "honor rolls" before,
>but they were never actually made public. I will also share this
>distinction with my friends and new acquaintances over this next very
>trying period.

At this time, our list of those supporting the murderer Abu-Jamal is
limited to those who have contributed to him financially. If you own a
business or have financially contributed, then I will pass along your name.

I urge you to visit: http://www.justice4danielfaulkner.com/ to find out
a little bit more about this case. This is NOT a honor roll, but a list
of people who are being used by Abu-Jamal to evade a just sentence.

>I absolutely believe in the innocence of Mumia and resolutely believe
>that his 'trial' was an unconscionable sham that should cause the very
>founders of the Constitution to roll over in their graves. To say this
>is a mockery of justice could be no more understated! If you want real
>JUSTICE for Daniel Faulkner, join us in demanding a new trial and
>finding the real killer.

Abu-Jamal _is_ the real killer.

The F.O.P. believes very strongly that he did receive a fair trial in
1982, as well as a fair PCRA hearing in 1995, a second one in 1996 and an
unprecedented third PCRA hearing in 1997. In neither of these four
trials was any evidence presented that he did not receive a fair trial and in
all cases, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled against him unanimously.

I do not know if you are aware of the true facts, both of his guilt and
those surrounding his trials. Abu-Jamal has been particularly adept at
distributing misinformation about his case to facilitate his
fundraising.

The F.O.P. is hopeful that our boycott will give Abu-Jamal's supporters
reason to look more deeply into the facts and perhaps reconsider their
support and donations.

Abu-Jamal shot Officer Daniel Faulkner in the back from less than twelve
inches away. The officer returned fire, hitting Abu-Jamal in the upper
abdomen before Abu-Jamal executed him by firing into the officer's
brain. Because Officer Faulkner had radioed for back-up before approaching
the vehicle driven by Abu-Jamal's brother, William Cook, officers arrived
on the scene approxiamtely 90 seconds after Abu-Jamal had killed Officer
Faulkner. While at the hospital, Abu-Jamal confessed to the murder.

These facts have not been disputed by Abu-Jamal or his attorneys in
court, though their public relations machine has manufactured claims that
the "real killer" escaped.

>An execution date for Mumia will only bring
>more and more national and international supporters together. Do you
>want a martyr or do you want justice? Remember, you can jail (or kill)
>the resisters, but not the resistance!

We want justice, and we expect that when the execution date is set, that
justice will prevail.
