From: "Taylor, Professor Mark" <mark.taylor@ptsem.edu>
Submitted by Mark Taylor
65 students and two faculty from Princeton University and Princeton
Theological Seminary, attended a symposium in support of Mumia Abu-Jamal.
The Forum featured two young, well-published professors - Farah Jasmine
Griffin of the University of Pennsylvania and Robin D. G. Kelley of New York
University. The Forum was entitled, STOPPING THE EXECUTION OF MUMIA
ABU-JAMAL: BETWEEN PRISON NARRATIVE AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS.
The meeting was moderated by Mark Taylor of Princeton Seminary. He
clarified that this was not a debate between those who want to execute Mumia
and those who do not. It was, instead, an opportunity to deepen our
critical understanding of the position for demanding Mumia's release and/or
a new trial for him.
Robin Kelley insisted on the necessity of international mass movements for
the creation of justice for Mumia. Farah Griffin addressed the distinctive
importance of Mumia's prison narratives, and the way Philadelphians are
organizing around Mumia's case.
Both issued clarion calls for Mumia's new trial and freedom, and offered
informative historical perspectives about our struggle. Robin Kelley lived
up to Cornel West's claim that he "is the preeminent historian of Black
culture writing today," and Farah Griffin's analyses were like Vibe
Magazine's description of her first book, "delicious brain food, without the
wordy rhetoric."
Watch for Kelley and Griffin's next books. Kelley's is on the jazz
pianist/composer, Theolonius Monk; Griffin's on the myth and meaning of
Billie Holiday.
People attending were new to the Mumia movement. One group of Princeton
University students, who previously had not heard of Mumia's case are
planning to organize.
For two days prior to the Forum, a table in the Princeton square was run by
Miriam Goldberg and Harry Felton, long-time supporters of Mumia in the area.
People were also signed up for diverse modes of action and involvement.
Keep on, everyone!
Mark Taylor

From: "Mumia Week" <info@j4mumia.org>
Reports & Event Updates from Mumia Awareness Week as of 9-22-99
Very soon The Supreme Court will hand down its decision on Mumia’s petition
for a writ of certiorari, which may result in the signing of a new death
warrant. No matter what happens, Mumia’s attorneys will be filing for the
writ of habeas corpus in federal district court in Philadelphia in October.
A federal judge will be asked to hear the evidence and witnesses that were
barred by the Pennsylvania courts, and to grant Mumia a new trial.
Mumia Awareness Week is our last opportunity to raise this demand on the
national stage before this final round of Mumia’s legal struggle for
justice. This is the moment to join in stopping the execution.
SEND REPORTS of your actions, no matter how small. How many and what kinds
of people came? What literature did you distribute? What did you learn?

Subject: ATTN: Tim Richardson, Ref: FOP Response to "Open Letter/Mark Taylor"
To: natlfop@wizard.net
Tim,
Please, go ahead an honor me also by adding my name to any FOP/Police list of
any sort. I strongly support a new trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal.
I wish I had more time to share more than the following thoughts with you:
As far as I am concerned, and I should know, American police forces are our
worst gang problem.
If your organization really cared about protecting our communities it would
be doing more to protect us from "gang-bangers with badges" of the sort that
make it to the rank of detective, steals pounds of cocaine from an evidence
room, and shoots a handcuffed citizen, paralyzing him for life, plants a gun
on him, then falsely testifies against him in a court of law, where he is
sentenced to life in prison while on a wheel chair, as is the case with the
new LAPD scandal. Ten other "polize" officers are suspended, one is jailed!
I'd say that is a
little piece of a gang.
Like the Mafia's code of silence, the police criminal code of silence is also
breaking down.
Just exactly what is your organization doing about tracking bad cops as they
move from one police department to another, from one law enfacement agency to
another, from one community to another, from one state to another?
What is your organization doing about suspending/revoking peace officer
certifications from bad cops?
What is your organization doing about racial/ethnic diversity in law
enforcement?
Has your organization ever assisted anyone in legally pursuing a single cop
criminally responsible (as in false reports/perjury in court) for the
conviction of an innocent citizen?
You are all afraid of new trial for Mumia because you know the second trial
will be a more truthful and fair one, the whole world is watching, and he
could be found innocent. That is your fear. This is not about Officer
Faulkner, this is about protecting the other "wall," too,
the wall within the criminal inju$tice $y$tem which chooses to believe police
perjury over public truth. That wall is also weakening, as more bad cops go
down.
As the bad cops are busted, your organization loses respect and credibility
with the public,
because, maybe you can tell us...How many of these bad cops are fully
credited member of the Fraternal Organization of Police? Or do you even
bother to keep those statistics?
You can b.s. the public, but a guy like me with twenty year of law
enforcement and criminal investigations (at "the higher level of
professionalism") is too wise for your propaganda. Your aim is to silence
your opposition...and in American law enforcement, especially at the local
level, the mentality of "the end justifies the means" is in fact a tradition
NOT an aberration.
Sincerely and with no fear of or respect for the F.O.P.,
