News Release:

Professor Angela Davis Will Hold a Press Conference in Pittsburgh After
Meeting with Mumia Abu-Jamal on Death Row

Pittsburgh, PA. October 10, 1999. Professor Angela Davis, once a political
prisoner herself, will hold a press conference in Pittsburgh on October 12
at 2:00 pm in the Wyndham Garden Hotel located at 3454 Forbes Avenue in
Pittsburgh (Oakland). The press conference will take place shortly after her
meeting with political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal on death row at State
Correctional Institution Greene in Waynesburg, PA.

There are striking similarities between the experiences of Professor Davis
and Mumia Abu-Jamal. She was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned as Mumia
Abu-Jamal has been. Her case caused a massive international "Free Angela
Davis" campaign that led to her acquittal in 1972. Currently a massive
international "Free Mumia" campaign is underway calling for a new and fair
trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal. It is widely believed that if such a trial were
granted Mumia Abu-Jamal would be acquitted.

Angela Davis is known internationally for her ongoing work to combat all
forms of oppression in the U.S. and abroad. Mumia Abu-Jamal was framed by
the Philadelphia Police because of his tireless and fearless efforts to
expose their corruption. His membership in the Black Panther Party was
invoked in the plea for his execution. Even while on death row he has been a
prolific writer, producing columns addressing U.S. Government corruption at
home and abroad. His writings have been translated into several foreign
languages.

During the last twenty-five years, Professor Davis has lectured in all of
the fifty United States, as well as in Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and
the former Soviet Union. Her articles and essays have appeared in numerous
journals and anthologies.

AN EMPIRE IN SEARCH OF A WAR!
[COL. WRITE. 10/6/99] ©1999 Mumia Abu-Jamal

Columbia has been the leading recipient of US military
support and training in the hemisphere in the 1990s, now increasing still
further. The pretext is the drug war.... The aid in fact goes to military
forces that have compiled the worst human rights record in the hemisphere,
and are closely linked to paramilitary terrorists and drug lords.
Information about the matter is voluminous, and shocking, but little of it
reaches the general public, who would be appalled if they knew.
--Noam Chomsky, Columbia Bulletin

The national corporate media is beating the drums for the heightened
intervention of the United States military into the internal affairs of the
Latin American nation of Columbia. According to the establishment media,
forces aligned with the FARC (The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia)
are "narcoterrorists", a clever term which unites the demonized figures of
drug dealers and 'terrorists'. It is what the media doesn't tell Americans
that tells the real story.
Colombia is far more than simply a country situated in Latin
America; it is a nation with over 45% of its population that is
African-Colombian. Most African-Colombians live along the coastal regions
of the country; on the Pacific Coasts region called Chocó, and on the North
Atlantic region called Urabá. It is in these regions that armed
paramilitaries are active, and where they have staged a number of massacres
of Afro-Colombians. The names of villages like Urrao, La Jagua de Ibirico,
Dabeiba, Antiquia, and Pavarando are more than places in the nation; they
are shorthand for massacres of people by U.S.-backed paramilitaries. One of
the U.S.-backed paramilitaries is known as ACCU (Self-Defense Groups of
Cordoba and Urabá).
Guess which group is supported by the CIA? The FARC or ACCU?
And when people consider the history of drug-trafficking by the CIA
in other parts of the world, what do you think is happening in Colombia?
Freelance journalist Frank Smyth, writing in the quarterly Colombia
Bulletin, reports:
Indeed most of Colombia's leftist guerrillas, especially
among the formerly pro-Moscow FARC, are also involved with drugs. But a
U.S. interagency study recently ordered by the Clinton Administration's
former ambassador in Bogotá, Myles Frechette, found the guerrillas' role to
be limited to mostly protecting drug crops, and, to a lesser degree,
processing operations. Meanwhile, rightist paramilitaries allied with the
military protect far more drug laboratories and internal transit routes,
according to both U.S. intelligence and Colombian law enforcement report,
drug trafficking today is-again-the paramilitaries' "central axis" of
funding.
[fr. Smyth, F., "Colombia's Blowback:
Formerly CIA-backed Paramilitaries are Major Drug Traffickers Now," Colombia
Bulletin, (Spring 1998), p. 15]

You won't read this in the regular newspaper, and you won't see it
on the regular network TV Newscast, but one wonders, Why Not? These facts
should be reported regularly on the U.S. news, to inform a people who are
being asked to 'stop narcoterrorism!'
The media manufactures new enemies for the Empire to destroy, more
rebellions to crush, in the name of Capital. Meanwhile, no one dares even
question that the drug industry is driven by the largest appetite in world
history-that of Americans hungry for more and more cocaine!
By the same token, American military intervention in Colombia has
nothing to do with 'narcoterror' and everything to do with quelling an
insurgency that threatens imperial control of a hemispheric neighbor.
Scholar Rensselaer W. Lee III wrote years ago that U.S. and Latin American
attempts to curb the flowing river of cocaine northwards were almost
destined to fall. Writing in the September 1988 issue of Orbis, Lee wrote:
"The solution, if there is one, lies not in the Andean jungles but in the
United States. The six million people who now consume cocaine must be
persuaded to change their habits."
Let us say no to this false 'narco-war'!
