Minutes of Millions for Mumia Worldwide
Melbourne Organising Meeting
27 October 1999, 6 pm @ Comrades Bar
Present: Alison [Freedom Socialist Party], Singh [Deaths in Custody Watch
Committee], Jess [ISO], Debbie [Radical Women] , Andrew [Workers' Power] and
Chris. Two representatives from the Spartacist League also attended at the
start of the meeting but, despite encouragement, elected not to stay and
participate.
Apologies: All of the Mumia activists involved with Barricade Bookshop [they
have an urgent meeting], Donna [she is in Queensland] and Craig H.
1. The meeting heard a report on Mumia's legal situation. The FSP received a
report today of the stay of execution on 26/10/99. The meeting agreed that
it is critically important to organise NOW.
2. Local organising:
* 28/10/99 -- Free Lorenzo! Free Mumia rally! 12 noon at the US Consulate,
St Kilda Road, organised by the Anarcho Syndicalist Federation of Melbourne.
* 13/11/99 - rally 12 noon at the GPO.
* Sydney activists also met last Sunday to plan activities.
3. 13 November rally organising:
* Demands -- the action on 13 November will be called "Emergency Rally to
Stop the Execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal". The two central demands will be Free
Mumia Abu-Jamal and Abolish the Racist Death Penalty.
* Leaflet -- Jess will design the leaflet. New endorsements should be
e-mailed to Jess at sphere_71@hotmail.com by 2 November.
The leaflet will include urgent solidarity actions people can take as well
as a summary of the key issues, the details the demands and the endorsers.
Jess will post the text on the local Mumia e-mail list with a 24 hour turn
around time for comment.
Current endorsers are: Freedom Socialist Party, Socialist Worker, Radical
Women, Worker's Power, RMIT Student Union, Democratic Socialist Party,
Friends of the Earth.
Jess will design the leaflet and will liaise with Andrew re donated
printing.
* Radio -- Singh will make a cart by Monday. The cart will include an e-mail
address. Singh will also seek an interview with leading international Mumia
committee activist, Pam Africa and will distribute this widely.
* Speakers -- agreed that union and Aboriginal movement speakers are a
priority.
Debbie has approached Indigenous leader, Richard Frankland, to speak and
will follow up with him.
Chris will seek a speaker from Amnesty International.
Sing will seek a speaker and an endorsement from the Deaths in Custody Watch
Committee.
Jess will seek a student union speaker. She also said Judy McVey from the
ISO and CPSU could speak.
Alison will contact Ted Price, a shop steward from HSUA and a member of
Trade Unionists for Land Rights to speak.
We will also have an open platform.
* Poster -- Andrew has designed an A3 poster. Poster will be available from
Thursday afternoon at the RMIT Student Union, Building 8, Level 3, Swanston
St.
* Sound system -- Andrew will approach the student union at RMIT for a
donation towards the costs of the sound system. He will book a good quality
sound system. We agreed that it did not need to be portable.
4. Other ideas
Singh will make booklets to promote the campaign and the rally using some
educational cartoon materials he has.
5. Next meeting
Alison reported that Anarchists comrades cannot attend if we meet on a
Wednesday.
Next meeting will be Thursday 6 November, 6 pm at Comrades Bar.
Alison confirmed that she cannot attend as there is a NMIT Unionists meeting
on the same date and at the same time. The date suited everyone else.
Meeting closed with announcements.
Alison agreed to circulate minutes on the Mumia list and to all present at
the meeting.
