> To our Friends,
> The community of Bassendean in conjunction with the Nyungah Aboriginal
> people with ties to the Pyrton land have stepped up our campaign against
> Justice Minister Foss' proposal to impose a prison on Pyrton Bassendean
Perth.
>
> The Community Picket runs every Wednesday from 6am to around 5pm.
>
> It is held on the Pyrton land at 60 Lord Street Bassendean.
>
> The land is a registered sacred site, is environmentally sensitive, and is
> right next to a built up residential area. There has been no social impact
> study done on the proposal of a prison there. No proper ethnographic
survey
> has been completed so far. A proper Ethnographic survey has to be carried
> out before any development goes ahead. Contrary to what Foss and the
> Ministry of Justice say, the Swan Valley Nyungah Community who live right
> next door have been available for a long time waiting for a proper
> ethnographic survey to be carried out before any development of the land
> goes ahead. Anthropologists approved by the Swan Valley Nyungah Community
> and Nyungah people with ties to the land have been waiting to be
> commissioned by the government to carry out the survey. Following an
> Aboriginal Cultural Materials Committee meeting a decision was made to
> conduct an ethnographic survey in accordance with the wishes of the
Nyungah
> people with ties to the land - but they were given 2 weeks to complete it.
> Anthropologists assigned the task pointed out that this is a totally
> inadequate amount of time. Hopefully an extension has been granted. This
> anti-community, anti-Aboriginal rights, anti-worker government is
> determined to try to destroy the land and community at Pyrton. Their
> attempts at division has worked against them on this issue. The Community
> is more united than ever against the Court/Foss government. We are more
> determined than ever to preserve the land as community public land for a
> Community and Environment Centre For All!
>
> Please come down to the Community Picket at Pyrton to say Hullo any time
on
> any Wednesday. Hope to see you there!
>
> Cheers,
> Neil Gray,
> Spokesperson, Pyrton Action Group.
