ASU and MCC Students Organize To Protest the Execution of PA Journalist
Mumia Abu Jamal
Mesa, AZ- November 19, 1999- The Progressive Student Union, an inter-campus
organization, will be holding a rally to protest the execution of political
journalist
Mumia Abu Jamal. The rally will be held in between in front of the new
ECapitol Building, in between the House and the Senate Building
(NW corner of Jefferson and 17th Avenue), and will take
place from 11:00 am until 12:00 p.m. This rally will be the first held in
Arizona,
but one of many being held world wide. The objective of the rally is to
increase
public awareness of this case, it is a travesty of justice. The
Progressive Student
Union hopes the rally will result in a stay the execution of Mumia Abu Jamal.
The Progressive Student Union(PSU) is an Inter-Campus, Inter-tribal,
Cross-cultural organization striving for the advancement of the worlds
abject and
working class. The PSU has gained the support of many campus organizations
for
this rally. Additionally, the PSU is working to bring these and many other
organizations under the PSU umbrella in an attempt to effect policy and
public opinion. The rally is expecting the attendance of The Muslim
Student Association (MSA; ASU, MCC), The African-American Unity Coalition
(AAUC; MCC), Moviniento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA MCC).
Mumia Abu Jamal, first became a thorn in the side of the US Government and
the Pennsylvania Police Departments at the age of fifteen, according to the
extensive FBI record that was kept on him since that time. As a radio
journalist
he often reported police misconduct. The same type of misconduct took place
the night(1981) that the Philadelphia Police Department found Mumia Abu
Jamal lying bleeding on the curb near Faulkners body. The tragedy of this
event can only be compared to the travesty that took place in the court room.
First, the defendant was barred from the court room and allowed to answer
any of the flimsy allegations against him. Evidence was with held by the
police
and the prosecution, and witnesses have since admitted being coerced by
police
threats. Many have decried the unfair trial. Since theconviction, the
Fraternal
Order of Police and Senate Majority Leader Robert Dole convinced
National Public Radio to greatly censor a focus report on him that used
recordings made by Jamal from prison. Still if it were not for the
incredible
political power of the Fraternal Order Of Police against Jamal in the media,
then the hanging" Judge that originally presided over the case would
be some hard won sympathy. The judge who sat on this case, the same man
who has more death row sentences to his credit than any other sitting judge
in the
country, has been the presiding judge in all of Jamals appeal requests.
The handling of this case has been called into question by seekers of
justice world wide.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel laureate and head of South Africa's Truth
and Reconciliation Commission; Ronald Hampton, Executive Director of the
National Black Police Association; The European Parliament, meeting in
Strousbourg; and Amnesty International, have all asked that this
case be reviewed. Those who will march at the capitol on November 27, 1999
from 11:00 until 12:00 ask the same.

Your timely response to Ms. Barbara Fortier's e-mail regarding the dire
deprivation of medication in the case of Standing Deer served as an essential
adjunct to the Pittsburgh legal team. The physician who had cut back on his
aspirin so severally, that he could not access the pill window to receive his
clonodine (which is for hypertension) since October, received a letter from
his own attorney. This along with your letters and our attorney rapport with
Dr. Jason Calhoun, put an end to this killer physicians's antics ---for the
time being. As you are all aware, the Texas Dept of Criminal Misjustice,
would relish the death of Standing Deer due to all his political and
spiritual activism and ovewhelming concern for humankind.
Therefore, it is necessary that we always remain vigilant in his situation
and respond to all emergency e-mails concerning him irrespective of the
source. We have no time to lose in questioning sources or whether we should
reply to unfamiliar names. We, at AFSC, stand behind Standing Deer 100 % and
request that you do the same and not let this strong admirable man become of
victim of TDJC. Please keep your eyes and ears to the ground when it comes to
both him if the Emergency Response Network, ever lags behind again.
As for Mumia, Judge Willliam Yohn has stated that he will entertain public
opinion leters if they are sent as follows: Judge William Yohn c\o Attorney
Leonard Weinglass 6 W, 20th Street Suite 10 A, NY, NY 10011. Leonard is
requesting an evidentiary hearing and new trial, based on evidence the
original and appellate trial judge Sabo either suppressed or would not allow
in the record information that would exonerate Mumia.
According to Ramona Africa, Leonard has until until mid-December to prepare
his arguments for an evidentiary hearing and new trial for Mumia, the
prosecution has 20 days to answer and Leonard has a speciified amount of days
for rebuttal to the prosecution's argument which will possibly go into
February. International Concerned Friends and Family of Mumia Abu-Jamal know
that this battle will not take place in the courts nor with judges and
attorneys but rather with the people and the streets. We need you all in
Philly on December the 11th as well as needing continued work expanding your
networks to save this valiant brother's life --who speaks for all of us in
the trenches. Mumia will not die! let us make this a reality by giving to him
what he always given to us.
In your letters to Judge Yohn, please let him know how informed you are about
the case. Get these letters out with the same dispatch that you got the
Standing Deer letters down to George Bush county!!!
Again, we thank you for all your tireless ceaseless work and the Pittsburg
legal team especially thanks for yur efforts on behalf of Standing Deer. We
know that you all must be aware that Standing Deer is eternally grateful also.
Free Mumia!
Free Leonard Peltier!
Free Standing Deer and all political prisoners and POW's!!

The Adult and Occupational Education Committee of United Teachers Los Angeles,
(UTLA) adopted a resolution Friday night Nov. 17, calling for the teachers'
union, a joint affiliate of the AFT and NEA, to join the campaign for an
evidentiary hearing and new trial for Mumia Abu Jamal. The resolution also
specifies a number of other measures, including a day of educational focus
on the social, political, legal and economic issues surrounding the death
sentence against the former Black Panther and uncompromising people's
journalist. At least four of the seven "area meetings," (geographic
subcommittees of the 38,000-member union) have adopted similar resolutions.
The proposals will be taken up at the next meeting of the UTLA "House of
Reps," the highest legislative and policy-making body of the teachers'
union, the first Wednesday evening in December, at the Union headquarters
building on Wilshire and Berendo in L.A.
Union member teachers are already preparing curricular materials that focus
on developing students' reading, writing, research and critical thinking
skills by examining issues related to charges of racial bias in the
criminal justice system and the application of the death penalty, and
similar concerns raised by the controversy over the death sentence imposed
on Jamal.
At the same meeting of the Adult & Occupational Education Committee,
members of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees struggling for
union recognition at the New Otani hotel came to thank the committee for
its support. The committee had successfully pressured a regional teachers'
conference into moving its scheduled gathering from the hotel in opposition
to the hotel's abusive labor practices. Several speakers at the meeting
linked the two issues as examples of the way in which the union can and
must ally itself with struggles for social justice, and build the
solidarity of the teachers with the rest of the community. The California
Federation of Teachers (CFT/AFT), one of two state-wide teacher
organizations with which the UTLA is jointly affiliated (the other is the
California Teachers' Association [CTA/NEA]), has already called for a new
trial for Abu Jamal.
Michael Novick, an elected representative of teachers in LA Unified's
Division of Adult & Career Education, who offered the resolution adopted by
the Adult Ed Committee of the union, is one of a number of anti-racist
teachers who have been campaigning within the union as a whole for support
for Mumia. The proposal was adopted virtually unanimously by the adult ed
committee, which represents about 4,000 of the union's members. The only
opposition came from a single African American committee member, who
expressed a fear that the union would be seen as "faddish" for singling out
Mumia's case when there are so many other local cases of unjust death
penalties against African American males and cases of police abuse such as
the LAPD Rampart scandal. Most members felt, however, that supporting Mumia
at this critical juncture of demanding a full evidentiary hearing and fair
trial was not counter-posed to the broader struggle for justice; but that
it would lead to greater engagement by teachers in that struggle and to
educating ourselves and our students about all the issues involved.

New support for Abu-Jamal
City's black lawmakers plan to make a bid in House to get him new trial
by John M. Baer- Daily News Staff Writer
HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, made up mostly of
Philadelphia lawmakers, plans to introduce a House resolution seeking a new
trial for convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal. Caucus Chairman Rep. James
Roebuck, D-Philadelphia, said he hopes to offer
the measure when the House returns following its Thanksgiving break.
That would mean Dec. 6, three days before the 18th anniversary of
Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner's murder, for which Abu-Jamal
awaits the death penalty.
Roebuck said he was pushing the issue because "I think there's been
increasing interest among constituents we represent to move this to
consideration" by the full House. He also cited ongoing concerns about
disproportionate numbers of African-Americans on death row and the
overturning last week of two Philadelphia-area mobsters' capital murder
convictions.
A Mumia new-trial resolution is certain to set off fireworks, especially
near the anniversary of the crime.
"It's outrageous on its face," said Rep. Dennis O'Brien, R-Philadelphia.
"There is no way we should dictate to another branch of government."
Michael Smerconish, attorney for Justice for Daniel Faulkner Inc., said,
"Sad and misguided are the two words that come to mind" on the resolution.
He added, "I think it's improper to tinker with a judicial process that's
under way. If he deserves a new trial, the federal courts will give him
one."
The resolution could have political ramifications.
While some members of the Black Caucus, including Rep. Andrew Carn,
D-Philadelphia, are supportive, others, including Rep. Dwight Evans,
D-Philadelphia, say the issue should face a full caucus vote before it's
offered to the House. The caucus has 19 members. All but three are
Philadelphians.
The volatile and polarizing issue could, said some lawmakers, further
distance Philadelphia interests from the Republican-controlled House just as
Mayor-elect John Street attempts to woo lawmakers.
It comes as Abu-Jamal's appeal is pending in federal court. He exhausted
appeals at the state level. The U.S. Supreme Court in October refused to
hear his case. Abu-Jamal was convicted in the Dec. 9, 1981, shooting death
of Faulkner, a decorated Philadelphia police officer. The killer shot the
officer in the face after a routine traffic stop involving Abu-Jamal's
brother.
Witnesses at the scene identified Abu-Jamal as the shooter. Nevertheless,
the 45-year-old death-row author and former radio journalist enjoys an
international following of supporters who believe him innocent or wrongly
convicted.
Gov. Ridge has twice signed death warrants for Abu-Jamal, the first lifted
by a Philadelphia court, the most recent lifted by U.S. District Court last
month. Abu-Jamal was scheduled to die by lethal injection Dec. 2.
Roebuck said some of the spark for the resolution comes from a state Supreme
Court ruling last week freeing two Philadelphia men convicted in the 1980
murder of Roofers Union boss John McCullough because of prosecutor
misconduct.
Roebuck said many believe there was prosecutorial misconduct in Abu-Jamal's
case.
Abu-Jamal's conviction was twice upheld by the state Supreme Court.

New Video On Mumia
Pending New Release - Expected Availability - February 2000:
Framing an Execution: The Media and Mumia Abu-Jamal
Mumia Abu-Jamal is on death row in Pennsylvania for his controversial
conviction in the 1981 death of a Philadelphia police officer. A worldwide
movement has demanded a new trial. How the major media would frame this
case was signaled by ABC's 20/20 and Sam Donaldson in a report on the case
aired Dec. 8, 1998 and again last August. The ABC 20/20 report,
"Hollywood's Unlikely Hero," goes beyond the news magazine's usual
"viewpoint" stance to obfuscate, misrepresent, and negatively label
defense efforts, while becoming a televised closing argument for the
prosecution. Commentators are scholars John Bracey, Nancy Snow, and Martin
Espada; Philadelphia reporter Milton McGriff; attorney Robert Meeropol;
media critic Janine Jackson of FAIR; and Mumia's defense attorney, Leonard
Weinglass. The program is hosted by actor and long-time champion of civil
rights, Ossie Davis. Producer, Tom Gardner.
Appended to the end of the video is the poem by Martin Espada that NPR's
"All Things Considered" refused to air.

Subject: MUMIA ACTION PROTEST FROM BUENOS AIRES (ARGENTINA)
On friday 19 it was accomplished a new protest action by the life of
Mumia, this was carried out marching from Italy Square until the
embassy of EEUU in Buenos Aires.
They were assembled around of 40 to 50 peoples. The protest elapsed
quietly with the "help" of the argentine federal policeman that cut
the traffic. They were thrown hundred of flyers within the embassy
and was painted the street. Also it was painted the sidewalk in one
of the car income to the embassy. There it began the problem. The
great PFA, always it attempts, it individualizes to the kid, Pichon,
that was painting the sidewalk. In the moment did not made nothing,
but to the while attempted to stop it. A policeman grasped it by the
force and in the same moment among all we surround to the policeman
so that would not be carried it, in the moment arrived more
"pitufos"and speaking with the delegate and after the desición of
Pichon we decided than carry it until the police station so that they
do not present charges by resistance to the authority. Inserted it
within a patrol and among all we surround to the patrol making a
chain humanizes to care that not happened to him nothing to Pichon.
The patrol rolled to our step behind the chain, without power to
advance. We directed us all the police station. In a moment, in the
rotunda, the patrol car accelerated by the lateral dodged us, we
leave running crossing the rotunda and reaching patrol car of the
other side. We arrive to the police station, all together. Pichon
entered and we enter 4 persons more to the police station to arrange
the matter. In those moments an advocated woman that works with
smaller and adolescents helped us to solve the problem and that the
detention of Pichon would not be overdone and not remain to him
charges. Such were. To the hour Pichon left, without charges.
It positive of the matter was our reaction, with inactivity and with
conscience. We maintained us altogether and nobody had greater
problems.
To vary the communication mass media were not, demonstrating once
again that not to them interests absolutely a real change and that
seek always the yellow and easy news.
The protest was organized by:
